Cybertopia

I think it is ironic that people refer to cyberspace as a utopia, or
cybertopia.  Yes, a perfect world would be nice, but in Thomas More's
"Utopia", a Utopia still had its disadvantages. There was no freedom of
speech, freedom of worship, etc. My point is that the internet is not
all perfect. While the internet is great for chatting, e-mailing, and
researching, there are still many things wrong with it such as hackers
who steal peoples private information and creepers.  Barker says that
the internet is actually a tool for surveillance and control, and in
some ways he is right.  For instance, the internet is used to prevent
fraud and apprehending criminals, "but how long will it be before the
same methods are deployed as a standard tool for identifying and
managing political dissidents?"
